Got a quick question today...
Do you have a portfolio of your work?
If you want to go pro and start getting paid for your time but haven't bothered to put a portfolio together, then you're not really that serious.
People aren't just going to take your word that you're good. They want to see, hear, feel, and taste the work.
(Obviously, this depends on what kind of work you do. I don't recommend tasting a painting or taking a bite out of a vinyl record).
The portfolio is a non-negotiable thing that signals to others that you're serious and good at your job.
Your portfolio might be:
- Songs you've mixed
- Albums you've produced
- Lyrics that you've written that have been published
- Album covers that you've designed
- Websites that you've created for artists
- Brands you've worked with
- Businesses that you've built
- Books you've written
And so on and so forth. You get the picture.
I've been in the creative game for a really long time so my "portfolio" is a bit different because I could mention so many different things.
- Music I've worked on
- Artists I've coached
- Brands and businesses I've consulted with
- Books I've written and products I've created
But my favorite portfolio item is the music that I've coached my students to release.
I put together a fun Spotify playlist with some of the favorite records I've helped people release. As long as you like music you'll definitely get a kick out of those songs.
When it comes to your portfolio, you have to start somewhere, even if you don't have a lot to work with.
Start small, think big, and take action.
You may start with a portfolio of a couple of things, and then work your way up the ladder of your career.
And sooner or later, your portfolio becomes your body of work because there's simply too much to mention.
At that point, you're not looking for work anymore. People are looking to work with you.
And if you think it's enough to throw up some rough mixes on Soundcloud and call it a portfolio, think again.
There's a lot more to it than that so if you want to get serious about your work so that you can go pro, I'd love to help.
I'm putting together a small intimate beta group together in January to help you get to the next level of your career.
If you want to create a portfolio of work to start getting noticed or raise your rates so that you can make a real income from your skills, then hit reply on this email and let me know.
I also have two slots available for my 1-on-1 program starting in January so if you're interested in getting personal help from me to get to the next level of success, I'd love to hear from you.
Cheers,
Björgvin
P.S.
In the meantime, while you wait for January, you should give yourself an early Yuletide gift and get yourself a copy of Step By Step Mixing so you can release amazing records or You Get What You Give so you can quit your job and kickstart your creative career.
