Jon Acuff is one of my favorite writers.
I recently finished his book, Soundtracks, that I recommend everyone read if they want to upgrade their self-talk from constant pessimism to realistic optimism.
But his book Finish is also a great one that's applicable to everyone trying to make music they're proud of.
In Finish, Acuff spends time talking about how we shackle ourselves to perfectionism.
How often have you abandoned a project just because it wasn't "perfect?"
The thing is, perfectionism is just procrastination in disguise.
And if you're constantly chasing perfection, you won't have a body of work to feel proud of.
Instead, you'll have a bunch of unwritten songs, muddy demos, and unreleased mixes cluttering up your creativity.
It's the surest way to feel dejected by your work.
The funny thing is, you may self-sabotage yourself NOT because your work isn't great, but because you're afraid of what success might bring.
"It’s not uncommon to experience the fear of success as you get closer to finishing...Sometimes you’re not afraid of the finish; you’re afraid of what happens after the finish. It’s one thing to complete your book. It’s another thing to have that book open to feedback from strangers on Amazon." -Jon Acuff
This is a feeling that is very real, but it disguises itself well.
When was the last time you didn't finish something because you were worried about what you had to do next?
Did the voice in your head tell you that you should labor a little longer, tweak things and waste time perfecting something that would never be perfect in the first place?
It's easier to keep working on something because then you won't have to worry about what happens next.
This is what I want to help you overcome with your mixes.
Next week, I'll be opening the doors to Mix Finisher Formula.
This is my flagship training program and it's for everyone who's committed to taking action to master their mixing skills by following a proven workflow that helps them finish and release their music.
Once you finish your mixes, you'll start creating a body of work that you're proud of.
That body of work may open doors for you as a musician and producer, showing you opportunities that weren't possible before.
My students have gone on to release new records every month, improving with each release by building a body of work they can be proud to promote to their fans.
Other students have taken my methods and built a career out of it, working with other musicians to help them realize their sonic vision, building a portfolio of work along the way that gets the attention of other clients.
Whatever your goal may be, it starts by mastering the audio skills you need to succeed and ends with a proven workflow that helps you crank out quality work every time you sit down in the studio.
Keep an eye on your inbox in the next few days on more helpful info on finishing your mixes, and then make sure you join me inside Mix Finisher Formula when it opens.
More later, talk soon.
