Many of you enjoyed my quick email about mix translation last week, especially my quick video about the "shitty speaker" I use to check everything on.
The most common
question I got from the video was from people who wanted to know what make and model it was and although I'm happy to tell you, it's not the exact speaker that matters.
That's not the important part.
The important part is
to check your mixes against consumer speakers because you want to make sure your mixes translate to every single speaker out there, even the god-awful garbage ones we hate the sound of.
Yes, even my dad's cement-crusted radio he brings to construction sites to play the slightly static tunes from radio Rás 2 has to sound decent...
So even though my speaker of choice is the Behringer Behritone mix cube, you can use any subpar consumer speaker with a narrow frequency response.
Even hooking up your smartphone speaker will give you some interesting indications of what your mid-range is translating
to.
However, I would recommend having any "mix translator speaker" permanently hooked up to your studio rig because you want the ability to quickly A/B your mix between your reference monitors and the "shitty" speaker.
You'll lose all
objectivity if you have to wait to bounce your track and take the mix into another room. The quickness is crucial.
It's not the make and the model that will magically make your mixes better. It's the workflow and the process of knowing what you're listening for.
And if you're looking for a fool-proof process for finishing your mixes and releasing your records, my Mix Finisher Formula program is guaranteed to take you there.
