There’s an old, clichéd quote from Benjamin Franklin that
says,
“By failing to prepare, you are planning to fail.”
I’ve seen that quote so often I’m rolling my eyes at myself for including that in one of my emails. However, there seems to be a reason it’s so often quoted.
Because it’s right on the money….pun intended.
Even though Mr. Hundred Dollar Franklin
died way before the invention of the audio recording industry, he still has a point that’s relevant to staying productive in the studio.
If you don’t plan what you’re going to do, you’re just going to fuck around on your Facebook or reorganize your kick samples until you run out of time to do anything creative, like mixing a song.
But if you plan exactly what you’re going to do creatively, then you’ll make time
to actually get started.
And the beauty of getting started is that it leads to progress. Progress leads to momentum which leads to motivation. That motivation makes you realize that hey, you’re almost done with your new song, production, or rough mix.
And then sooner or later, look! You’re done!
It may not be perfect. It may not even be close to your best
work.
And it’s not just a new and pointless way of rearranging your sample library.
It’s a new creation.
It’s a new mix that's got you one song closer to becoming a better mixing engineer.
That's why preparation and planning are so important.
They lead to real
results.
If you're looking for productive tips that help you get real, actionable results instead of floaty daydreams, you'll find them in my new eBook, Better Mixes in Less Time.
It's out on Friday but if you pre-order it here you can get it for 25% off.
Are You Hesitant to Buy it Because You Don't Have a Kindle?
You don't actually need a Kindle tablet to read a book on Kindle. All you need is the Kindle app, which is available for any smartphone, tablet or desktop device. That way you can read it on any device that's convenient for
you.
Here's the link to the book again.
Here's to making more mixes and improving your skills in a shorter amount of time!
