Have you ever written a song and not known whether it’s any good?
Or do you have a collection of songs and you don’t know which ones you should record for your album?
That’s exactly the type of
situation many musicians, myself included, find themselves in all the time.
For instance, if you want to produce an EP and already have a collection of songs to record, you might not be sure the songwriting is as good as it can be.
Before you get a band together and record your songs, you want to make sure
everything is planned out.
- The song structure
- The lyrics
- The melody
And last but not least, brainstorm the instrumentation and
arrangement.
If you want to make a good record you have to start with a great song. No amount of expensive microphones, fancy mixing techniques or dynamic mastering will make a boring song sound better.
It starts way before the gear, with the ears of a skilled music producer.
What is a Pre-Production Session?
If you think recording sessions are stressful, try being involved in a pre-production session!
Last year, Lij Shaw and I did some prep for a few of my songs that ultimately became the Pre-Production Workshop we're releasing again this week. The process was exciting and nerve wracking at the same time because we were using some of my songs.
I gotta tell you, the Pre-Production Workshop was just as informative to me as it will to you.
Being the pupil and student and letting the White Wizard Lij Shaw, the Magician of Music Production...the Gandalf of Good Music...was eye-opening for me!
Throughout the workshop Lij's wisdom washed over me as we went through my songs, charting them out and thinking through each part of the arrangement.
Some of the things we changed during the session was:
- We slowed one of the songs down so that the emotion and feel could come through correctly.
- We changed the melodic hook of a chorus to make it simpler and more singable.
- We realized that one of my songs didn't really have a chorus so we wrote a brand new one on the spot, taking the entire song to a new level.
We'll be showing you all
those changes, in addition to talking about how you can strengthen lyrics, how you can chart out a song to make it easy for session musicians to play on your record and how to find the right instrumentation and arrangement for your songs.
