Ship’s Log, day 4. International Waters, somewhere outside of Cuba

Happy Thanksgiving (or Thursday) guys!

I’m writing this on our vessel, The Empress of the Sea.

Don’t let the name fool you. It’s more like a D-list National Lampoon’s movie with Chevy Chase’s third cousin twice removed than the grandeur of which the name implies.

What I mean to say is that even with its advantages, a cruise is exhausting in the same kind of way that being stuck in a glorified shopping mall in international waters would wear you out.

Only it comes complete with a stale cafeteria buffet, overpriced bars and white people. Lots of old white people.

But the 360 degree views of the ocean as far as the eye can see is nice though. Escaping the traditional Thanksgiving debacle with your family is refreshing at the same time. Last year we flew to Japan. This year we cruised to Cuba. And in Cuba we cruised in style!

By the way...the "fast" internet on this boat is so slow it took a few minutes for this image to upload. I got flashbacks to the early days of the internet when I waited ages for my Pamela Anderson pictures to slowly reveal themselves down the screen, one pixel at a time.

Anyways...

I’m not sure if our tradition of traveling over Thanksgiving is "escaping Thanksgiving," or researching how other island nations stack up against Iceland. But so far we’re two for two on our unofficial research project.

So I thought I’d send you a quick message just to make sure that your Thanksgiving (or Thursday for everyone else), didn’t go without some snarky jokes about the sea from yours truly.

If I end up dying a horrible death at sea, I feel comfortable with this being the last message you’ll receive from me.

But let’s not fool ourselves, I’m a strong swimmer so I’ll probably make it. It’s what happens when your nation forces you to take ten years of mandatory swimming lessons. Go democratic socialism!
