Mike just finished the Mixing With 5 Plug-ins course recently and here's what he had to say about his experience going through it:
"Having read your ebook already [Step By Step Mixing], things make much more sense now watching the video. So I would advise everybody to read the ebook first. Watching the videos later, sort of glues everything (facts and details of the ebook + visual and sound concept of the videos) together.
He really enjoyed the EQ video, especially the trick where I show you how to cut a wide frequency range while still adding a bell boost in the middle to bring out a specific characteristic of the instrument. He appreciated my EQ techniques when it came to reducing sibilance as well.
As he went through the "never-ending topic of compression" he learned a lot of really new tricks, like using harmonic EQ after compression, which he called his "new weapon."
When he got to the reverb and delay section of the course he appreciated my take on using EQ on reverbs, creating subtle vocal space and using sends instead of inserts, calling it "super helpful."
As we wrapped up the series, here's what he shared:
"It’s absolutely wrapping up a cool series on ‘easy’ mixing. I really like your idea of NOT overloading tracks with millions of plugins. It’s like in American football, a pair of fancy and expensive receiver gloves don’t help if you can’t catch the ball. Thank you for a well-balanced course. I got a lot out of your natural way of explaining things."
I don't know anything about American football, but I do know that skills are better than gear, regardless of whether's it's a game-winning touchdown or a mix that jumps out of your speakers.
