Today, making your music as loud as you possibly can in your studio is pointless.
If you go overboard, the streaming services will simply turn down your music so that it sits at the same level as the rest of the songs you listen to.
So, in a way, it's a lost opportunity to enjoy the dynamics of your music. You don't gain anything from the extra limiting and loudness you're trying to add during the finalization phase because the robots will simply yawn and turn you down.
At best, your song sounds about the same but at a consistent level with other songs. At worst, it'll sound small and lifeless.
So how do you avoid your mixes getting turned down by Spotify, Youtube, iTunes, and all the other streaming services?
Easy, you use the Loudness Penalty plug-in from MeterPlugs.
I've been using their web app for a while now, but their latest release is ready to rock inside your DAW.
That means that you can see, in real-time, how well your final mixes and masters will fare when you upload them to streaming.
