When it comes to eating healthy, I try to be as low carb as possible, if only so I can drink more beer.
I don't always succeed, because who really succeeds 100% at eating right?
Nobody. Everybody who tells you otherwise is lying.
For the last seven years or so I've had the same "green" smoothie for breakfast. I put green in quotation marks because if you put blueberries in it, it'll turn purple.
I would say that this breakfast routine is one of my longest-running habits. I often skip lunch in lieu of a second helping of smoothies when I want to lose weight - while still drinking delicious craft beer because I'm not a sadist.
The reason I'm telling you this is because yesterday I threw this routine out the window. Although I drank a smoothie for breakfast, I ate too big of a lunch, resulting in a non-productive mid-afternoon food-coma. And then I ate a huge bowl of crazy spicy ramen for dinner.
And because my body is used to its seven-year habit, these actions destroyed my energy levels — both yesterday afternoon and this morning.
All because I veered slightly off-course in my habits. All because I overdid something. This mind/body awareness is an incredible thing because it teaches you how to stay on top of your game. Today, I am not at the top of my game, but I learned something useful that will help me stay on top in the long run.
- Don't eat a big lunch.
- Ask for mild next time.
It's the same when you use too much saturation or compression in your mixes. It comes down to awareness. Whether you're aware of how your mind and body are feeling or how your mix is sounding.
If you overdo it, you'll overcook your mix. It won't sound as balanced and "healthy" as it should. Although there's no "one right way" to mix a song, you can still accidentally overcompress and distort your mixes if you're not careful and aware of what you're doing.
By now, you should be aware of the five essential processors you need to make great mixes:
- EQ
- Compression
- Reverb
- Delay
- Saturation
Using these five processors effectively will make your mixes sound great. But...too much of any of these things can throw your mix off balance as well.
If you want the awareness to use these five plug-ins to make the best mixes you can, my Step By Step Mixing process will help you out.
