A reader writes in with a problem on recording vocals:
"I don't have money to buy several mics and it's a bit of a problem I face for recording different vocalist. Cause each of them sounds different in the same mic."
Well I guess you just gotta go buy a new microphone every time you have a new singer then.
Just kidding.
It's actually a common problem if you don't have the budget for a big and expensive mic locker.
But it's also a problem that creates a fun new challenge for you.
It makes you look at EQ in a different way and teaches you to EQ better.
Not for simply boosting and cutting to make things sound better but for making things sound different.
EQ'ing to change the sound of someone's voice is a whole lot different than just mixing it to sound good.
One time I had a vocal session with a female duet. Their voices were really different from each other and we had a hard time blending their harmonies.
So we approached EQ differently. Instead of making each voice sound great on its own we tried to get them sounding as similar to each other as possible.
It was sort of like we used each voice as a reference track to EQ the other.
It resulted in a nice blend of the two voices, making their harmonies sound much better.
That's really the opposite of the problem this reader has but just like you can use EQ to make things sound the same, you can also make things sound different.
So in all honesty I don't think having one mic poses such a big problem.
I doubt you want all the vocalists to sound the same so it's actually great that they sound a bit different. But if they sound bad, see if you can fix it with EQ in the mix. Tiny EQ changes here and there can alter the voice and change its sound.
I don't advocate fixing stuff in the mix all the time, but if the alternative is to run to the store to buy more equipment I say focus on honing your EQ skills first.
And you know what? Your Ultimate Guide to EQ is a thousand times better than running to the store every time you get a new vocalist.
Answer me this:
Would you rather grab my EQ Strategies - Your Ultimate Guide to EQ and learn a ton of new EQ tricks to make your vocalists sound better with the same microphone
or...
Spend hundreds of a dollars on a new microphone and end up at the exact same place as before with less money?
It's a no brainer to me.
