My business coach asked me three crucial questions yesterday that I want to share with you.
Whenever you're feeling anxious or insecure about what you're doing, whether that's producing your music or improving your music career, we tend to have this negative self-talk that limits us from even trying to become the best version of ourselves.
Never mind that we could achieve it if we tried. We don't even try because we're too afraid of even testing the waters.
So when you feel the pull of insecurity holding you back from trying something you haven't done before, keeping you firmly in your comfort zone (where nothing truly spectacular happens), ask yourself these three questions:
- What are you afraid of?
- Is it important?
- Should you do it anyway?
The worst thing that happens is that you fail and you learn something new to guide you in yet another direction. The best case scenario is the best case scenario - you succeed.
Take EQ'ing for instance. You may have a lot of doubt about whether you're doing it right. You may think that you should do this, or should do that.
But the only thing that you should do is what sounds good.
So the next time you're worried about whether you're EQ'ing too little, or too much, those three questions are just as applicable:
- What are you afraid of?
- Is it important?
- Should you do it anyway?
For example, you're worried about adding too much low-end to your bass guitar because it might muddy the mix.
- So what you're afraid of is muddying up the mix.
- In this case, it's more important to find out whether it will muddy up the mix than being too scared to try.
- Therefore, you should do it anyway because it's the only way you'll know for sure!
If you want to level up your EQ skills, you're going to need to continually push your comfort zone outwards by practicing more and learning new skills.
