Should you do this? Or should you do that?
Try both in your mix and see which one sounds better.
One of the most limiting beliefs we have is this fear that we're somehow damaging our songs by getting aggressive with the processing.
Sometimes it doesn't work to be tame. Sometimes you need to boost more than 3 dB or compress more than just a tiny bit.
Sometimes you need to crank that EQ up 10 dB and completely squash that compression.
All you "should" do is whatever serves the song.
Whether that means boosting 10 dBs and making an EQ curve that looks weird or scary doesn't matter. All that matters is whether the song sounds better.
If you want to overcome your mixing disbeliefs and start getting label quality mixes with the gear you already have in your home studio then you'll like this mixing webinar from my buddy Jordan over at Hardcore Music Studio.
He'll be busting open some mixing myths you probably believe in, as well as sharing his step by step mixing process to get faster, radio-ready results from your mixes.
I took this webinar about a year ago and I loved his no-nonsense attitude about making records. His thoughts on getting results from his EQ no matter how crazy looking the curves look is refreshing, to say the least.
If you want to learn how to make big sounds out of whatever gear you got and start making mixes that translate to every speaker system, the information in the webinar will help you start making better mixes immediately.
