I've got a mix confession to make.

Although my studio setup is pretty sweet, it's not where I make the final call on mix translation.

Don't get me wrong, I've got Focal monitors with a sub, a pair of Yamaha HS5s and a Behritone mix cube. So I've got plenty of speakers to choose from when I want to see how my mix translates.

But unfortunately, the best speakers to use while going through the mix translation process are the speakers that you listen to the most.

And unfortunately, the studio is not where I listen to songs most of the time. And more importantly, it's not where the average consumer listens to music either.

When it comes to pure listening pleasure while doing something else,  it's not happening in the studio.

It's happening in the kitchen or the living room.

And the speaker that's slowly becoming an invaluable part of my mix translation routine is....unfortunately...my Amazon Echo.

If my mixes don't compare to the random stuff I play while I'm cooking dinner, it's back to the mixing board!

I would argue that because the Echo is made for the average music listener, you must make sure your mix sounds good on it. The same goes for your earbuds, your beach Block Rocker or even your iPhone speaker.

Because the frequency response of all these speakers is so different, you need to be extra aware of how your mix reacts to them. Some speakers will enhance the low-mids, making the entire mix muddy. Others will add undue harshness, detaching your vocals and guitars from the rest of the mix.
