One of the final steps of getting mixes to translate to other speaker systems is the finalization process when you're mastering.
You can take pretty broad strokes while you're mixing and make some drastic mix moves to make your mix explode from your studio speakers. But, getting those crazy mix moves to translate may mean that you need a lighter touch during mastering.
You'll still need accurate monitoring in the studio, and you still need to listen to your mastered mix on consumer speakers to learn how your monitoring will translate across the board.
Luckily, especially if you're just mastering a single song, you can get away with mastering on your mix/master bus.
And the most important processor on your master bus will be your EQ.
Because each speaker system has a different frequency response, subtle EQ tweaks will help you get a consistent mix balance from one speaker to another.
The key to effective mastering EQ is subtlety. You want to be as invisible as possible so that your mix doesn't change, while still cleaning up the frequency issues you hear on consumer speakers.
