This past week we've been talking about the importance of getting great recordings if you want to get great mixes that you're proud to release.

The fact is, the entire mixing process hinges on the quality of the recordings. If they aren't good, mixing just becomes a giant hassle.

I've been mixing a lot of songs lately and I can tell immediately how easy a mix will be by the quality of the recordings. In fact, it's counter-intuitive, but the better the tracks, the less of my fancy plug-ins I need.

Instead of my cool Waves plug-ins or fancy UAD channel strips, I can get away with just the normal stock plug-ins to get those recordings sounding great.

You just need to know how to use the equipment you already have to get good recordings. Then the mixing becomes that much easier.

Not only does mixing become easier, but you have to spend less money on premium plug-ins because you've already got everything you need.

All you need are some decent recording skills to make great home recordings, even if you don't have great gear.

In fact, if you know how to position a microphone correctly in your room, even a $100 mic can sound pretty good.

I mixed this song by an Audio Issues student, Bob Gardner and he released it on Spotify as the first single for his new solo project.

And those vocals are recorded with a $100 Audio Technica microphone. Hardly a high-end Neumann!
