I've had several "ah-ha" moments since becoming a member of Audio Issues Insiders. This week's Feedback Friday may have provided the biggest one yet. I always struggle to get my guitars and vocals to fit together. The idea of placing an EQ cut between 900 and 3k on the instruments to create space for the vocals is huge, particularly when combined with a sidechain. I just employed that technique on a track with which I've struggled to get the vocal front and center without emasculating the guitars. It worked very well.

It's a simple trick but it really works. If an instrument seems to be clashing with the vocals, a wide cut in the high mids from around 900 Hz - 3 kHz will give the vocal more space in that frequency range, effectively carving out that area for the vocal to sit in.

Simple, but very effective.
