It's just a game of pushing buttons, moving faders and twisting knobs until the tracks you started with sound like the song you hear in your head.
You can waste a lot of time reacting to the song, moving from one element to another, not knowing where you're going.
You hear a problem and you fix it. You find another problem and you make it better. Then something else needs your attention.
Four hours later your mix is better, but you're still jumping from one thing to another without a system and you have no idea whether it's finished or not. You could keep tweaking for hours, but it doesn't seem to get any better - it's just different. You're scrambling around tweaking things without any sense of progress.
Skip the game of Whack-a-Mole and go straight to the prize. Use a system instead and start making better mixes with only five plug-ins.
P.S.
Here's what a student of mine had to say about my training that helped him release his album Bag of Bones this year:
"I was a total rookie a couple of years ago and I found your forum online. I learned a lot from your followers there, and also by you. I've taken the Mixing With 5 Plug-ins course, read a lot of different stuff you have around, and also did your online 1-on-1 lessons which really made a huge difference. Talking to you in person and getting pinpointed tips was really helpful. When we first met I had already made one album which was... kinda ok, but I just knew
that I needed to learn more. My final album would never have been the same without you" -Kjell-Vidar Teig
