Your home studio when you're old...
Although I think you can make great mixes with only stock plug-ins, I do use a lot of fancy premium plug-ins from Waves, UAD, Plug and Mix, Fabfilter, etc.
But you know what most of those plug-ins are?
They usually fall into these five categories:
- EQ
- Compression
- Reverb
- Delay
- Saturation
Premium plug-ins tend to oversimplify things, like all the artists series from Waves, like the CLA bundle. But I still think you should have an idea of what those plug-ins are actually doing to your mix. And as long as you know what the actual processors behind the plug-ins do, it's easy to know your way around any user-interface.
The controls might have fancy names like "thwack" or "edge" but if you know what frequencies those names correspond to, it's easy to understand what you're doing.
That's why I spend so much time teaching you the vocabulary of frequencies inside EQ Strategies - Your Ultimate Guide to EQ.
You have to learn the slang if you want to understand.
