If you've been putting off releasing your songs because you're not sure which one to pick - you're not alone.
The good news is, which song you pick to release doesn't matter. It won't define you as an artist or pigeonhole you into a specific genre.
You still have the ultimate creative freedom as an independent artist. One song doesn't matter. It's the catalog that does. The body of work.
When I'm asked about my books I tell people I've written six. Those are the six that I am most proud of. The truth is that I've actually released about nine. I just don't count those because I don't think they're up to the new standards I set myself as a writer.
But if it wasn't for those books, I wouldn't have written Step By Step Mixing or EQ Strategies. Those first books got me where I am today.
Because I released.
I hit publish even though I was afraid that they weren't good enough. And then I improved from there.
You can do the same with your music and that brings me to startups.
I went to lunch with a friend of mine this week. He's a technologist and has been a chief technology officer of some sort for decades.
He worked for Dreamworks. He made music notation software. He worked for Apple on the iPhone 1 team. We can't have a conversation unless we have two hours blocked off because we immediately become nerds. He has lots of Steve Jobs stories and unsurprisingly, he shares some of his ideologies.
Especially this one:
"You have to ship"
If you're not familiar with startup lingo, shipping just means releasing.
Ship your product before it's perfect. It's never going to be perfect.
Ship your product as soon as it's usable and improve from there.
Ship your product if you think it's still an ugly baby. Especially if it's an ugly baby.
The same goes for your music.
Release your song even if it's not perfect. It'll never be "perfect." Perfect is the enemy of done.
Release your song so that you can move onto the next one. The next one will be better, I promise. If only because of everything you learned from releasing the previous one.
Release your song when it's good enough and start building a body of work.
Good enough is good enough until you're good enough to be better.
And if you want someone to hold your hand and tell you exactly what to do so that you can feel confident that your music sounds professional enough to release, I'm here to help.
I only have two of the five slots left for the 30-Day Song Success Strategy so if you'd like to join, please hit reply and send me the track you'd like to release in the next 30 days. It's on a first-come, first-served basis so make sure you get in touch today!
Here's what you'll get from the program:
- Mix Improvement Session: 1-hour one-on-one coaching session including feedback on your song and mix improvement ideas. I make sure you're aware of all the techniques you can use to improve your song, including advanced parallel processing, side-chain routing effects, bus processing, and effective EQ'ing, to name a few things.
- Professional Mastering: Once your mix is finished I take the song and master it professionally so that it sounds as good as it can be, making sure that it's dynamic enough and loud, but not so loud that it gets turned down on streaming services. You get a high-res WAV and mp3 to use for your release.
- Release Strategy: A second one-hour coaching call where we talk about every step you take to release the song, including advice on cover art and all those things that people often gloss over. I walk you through the entire process to make sure you're optimizing your song listing as well as your Spotify artist profile. I have some web design services you can use to create simple cover art for your song.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
