Got into a bit of back and forth with a subscriber the other day.

He didn't like the fact that I was telling you that you could mix with stock plug-ins like you learn inside Quick Mixing With Stock Plug-ins that's on sale for 50% off until tomorrow.

He told me, "Can I stop you..." (as if I'm going anywhere. I've been here helping out for ten years...)

"I have some important points to make...The best mixers don't work with stock plugins, sure Warren Huart has demonstrated mixing with stock and good results but I bet my bottom dollar those stock plugins won't be on the next Aerosmith album."

Warren's the MAN! But hey...did you see Aerosmith at the Grammys? Dude looks like a lady indeed.

Then he says, "I have a console 1 with several desks to choose from and also Waves Abbey Road desks and I had tried many back to back on different instruments and they all sound completely different so unless you want a mix to be bog-standard you must employ different plugins to get the achieved sound."

And therein lies the point that bothers me: Just because you wasted all this money on plug-ins doesn't mean that other musicians have to in order to get a good sound. Don't pull other people down with you just because of your Gear Regret Syndrome. You can still make great music with the gear you already have.

He continues on for a while about this plug-in or that plug-in, but then he ends by saying:

"A good workman doesn't blame his tools but also a good workman has good tools and knows how to use them."

And isn't that the fucking point?!? The stock plug-ins you have inside your DAW are GOOD TOOLS! Moreover, I told him, I totally agree with most of his points.

I use very particular plug-ins on many things:

• LA2A on parallel vocals
• MV2 on snare
• Pulteq on the mix bus

However, my mission isn't to tell people what plug-ins to buy, that's the job of those companies. My mission is to empower musicians like yourself to make an impact by teaching you how to use the tools you have available to release the music you love.

Please understand this "subtle" distinction: I am an educator, and teaching you how to use the plug-ins you have (whatever the brand name is), is more important to me and the mission of Audio Issues.

You can use whatever EQ you desire, and it's my hope that you will learn how to use it from my materials.

Buy as many plug-ins as you want, but if you don't know how to use the stock stuff in your DAW, you're no better off than before. Now you just have more gear you don't know how to use.

I'll prove to you that you're able to create a quality mix in only two hours, using only the stock plug-ins you have at your disposal. A lot of great songs have been mixed with stock plug-ins on the fly so you don't need a $500 plug-in bundle to get a great mix. You just need to know how to use the tools you have at your disposal.

Best of all, most of the methods I use aren't very DAW specific so if you've got a DAW that has EQs, compressors, reverbs and delays (and any saturation plug-in on the market) you're good to go.

Get Rid of the Noise

I know that Youtube has a million different video tips and tricks to help you with your mixes.

But unfortunately, those are all random tips that are detached from each other. They don't give you a beginning, middle, and an end. 

They just give you random tips to try out, which is cool and all but you're still stuck at the beginning, not knowing what to do next. You can certainly search for videos teaching you mixing tips and techniques, but no video will show you the time-saving techniques and workflow you need to mix faster.
