It was nuts getting back into the United States last weekend.
After three canceled flights, multiple re-routes, and two very nice ladies from Delta, I finally made it back to the studio.
After coming back, I've been asked multiple times: "No! Why didn't you stay in Iceland! It's so much safer and you have healthcare and blablabla"
These people completely miss the very simple fact that I live here and have a home here. I'm not just going to abandon the life I built out of fear. Besides, I can be more useful for you in the studio than stuck at home on my parents' couch.
But it made me think about the mentality of the people who ask these sorts of questions.
Although they mean well, what they're ultimately telling me is that they think the grass is greener on the other side, and because I made it there, I should stay. They completely ignore the fact that the grass is not greener on the other side, and the only reason your grass isn't green on your side is because you don't tend to your garden.
Musicians and producers have the same mentality when it comes to plug-ins.
They think they need the newest EQ and the brand-new mix bundle because it's the only way they think their mixes will improve.
Unfortunately, their mixes will stay the same regardless of what plug-ins they use if their skills stay the same. Your mix isn't greater on the other side because of the plug-ins you bought. Your mix improves because you invest in learning how to use the plug-ins you already have.
And one of the best plug-ins you can learn to use that will immediately skyrocket the quality of your mixes is your simple stock EQ.
Your EQ will:
- Clean up your low-end
- Separate your tracks so you can hear each instrument clearly
- Help you get a clear balance across the frequency spectrum
- Add weight in your low-mids and power in your middle frequencies
- Help you add presence to your vocals and brilliance to your instruments
And last but not least, add that high-end air and sheen that make your mixes sound like the professional records you love so much.
That's what EQ Strategies - Your Ultimate Guide to EQ is designed for. It's the most comprehensive EQ guide you will find online, with in-depth explanations of the entire frequency spectrum and where you can find and eliminate problems like boxiness, muddiness, and harshness.
A recent customer, Joe Posada, just sent me this note, saying:
"I recently got EQ Strategies, and it is exactly what I was looking for in terms of a comprehensive explanation of how eq is done."
So if you're tired of tweaking one frequency after another without getting the sound you hear in your head, let this week be the week you finally learn to master EQ.
