Having a general mixing template is invaluable to speed up your mixing process. If you spend a little time making a mixing template that covers 80% of your mix moves, then you’ll have everything ready in one place when you start.
You won’t need to add plug-ins or create aux sends every time. They’ll all be there, waiting for you to start.
I’ve learned that I use a lot of the same plug-ins, effects, and routing tricks in every mix, regardless of genre. Once I realized that I took the time to set up a comprehensive mixing template that predicted the mix moves I would make, speeding up my mixing process immensely. I would say my mix template probably saves at least an hour for every song because I’ve thought of all the common things I do in every mix.
How to Create Your Own Template
Your process might be slightly different, but if you’re aware of your process after every mix you’ll create your mix template over time.
Jonathan Timpe, a student of mine, has a mixing template method in progress that’s slowly evolving over time.
“The way I setup my mix template was I mixed a song, then removed all the audio and automation, but keep the tracks, routing, and effects. I then mixed another song and after I was done asked myself if there were things I wanted to change or make easier, faster for the next time. So though my template is still evolving slightly, it's a pretty solid starting point now.”
Having a starting point where you don’t have to set every single thing up each time is a crucial factor in making your mixing faster. How you create your own mixing template is up to you, and I highly recommend you steal mine for inspiration, but being aware of the plug-ins and processing you usually do is key.
Having a mixing template already set up that tackles 80% of everything you throw at it will save you a lot of time in the long run. You’ll save at least an hour every mix because you won’t spend any time finding the right plug-in; you won’t need to create send effects nor find the right effects for your song. If you set up the right template you’ll already have the busses and effects you’ll need, with everything already routed and ready to
roll.
In the rest of the Mix Template Module in week two, we walk through each part of my mix template:
- My mix bus plug-ins and when I use them
- My drum mix template I've set up to get powerful and punchy drums fast
- My instrument busses that work for almost every multi-track I get sent (and how easy it is to adapt the mix template to any genre)
- All of my parallel effects busses that help me create depth, space, width and power in my mixes
