I Haven't Written 50 Songs But I Wrote Three Versions of This One..

Published: Thu, 03/26/15

I was listening to the very inspirational episode of the Simply Recording Podcast yesterday.

They were talking about Joe's challenge of writing 50 songs in 12 weeks.

It's a crazy challenge and something that I'm gearing myself up for doing but it got me thinking about one of my songs.

In the next 6-8 weeks we'll be releasing a song called "Perfect Pocket" through our LongWait Patreon page. I'll be documenting the whole process and you'll be able to check out how the song evolves from rough tracks to finished single.

So when I did the first video this morning I found two previous versions of the song in my archives.

The first one is a very melancholic and slow demo.

The second one is a 2011 live recording of The Long Wait playing an alternative folk version of it.

And the funny thing is, the upcoming single sounds like NEITHER of them.

That's what I like about songwriting. It's a very flexible and fluid process. When you finish a draft of a song there's no real reason it HAS to be that way. It's yours. You can do whatever you want with it.

So that's the topic of this week's Patreon video so if you're a songwriter or a budding music producer maybe you can grab some inspiration from it.

It's the same way with recording too. It's a flexible process.

Live recordings become rough rehearsal recordings.

Rough recordings become demos.

Demos become studio productions.

There's an evolution there that's such a big part of the process.

So if you're looking to evolve your recording skills to the next level, this week is the time to do it.

My Recording Strategies package is going UP in price tomorrow night so grab your copy before it's too late.

Here's what Ken Fox, a recent engineer that took the dive into improving his recordings, had to say:
