Got some life advice for you today...
Go to the frickin' doctor!
My right index finger has had quite a sizable bump on it for about 2 years now. I didn't think too much of it.
Probably a cyst. No big deal. I'll deal with it when I deal with it.
Typical macho bullshit right?
Well, turns out it's a tumor. Or a benign giant cell which has a nicer ring to it I guess.
So I'm booked for surgery today to finally get rid of it.
It's supposed to be a simple procedure but I can't stop thinking....what if something goes wrong?
After all, I use my index finger a lot. Like right now as I type. And when I play guitar.
And when I click on a mouse to move a fader and put a plug-in on.
So obviously I've gone through every pessimistic scenario in my head and I've decided that I can learn to play guitar with my middle finger holding the pick.
If Django Reinhardt can play virtuoso guitar with only two fingers on his left hand I'm sure I can manage.
But it brings me to a question I've asked before:
What's your plan B when something breaks?
If your good vocal mic stops working do
you have anything else you can use?
Do you maintain your instruments? Clean the strings and make sure they don't dry out?
Do you have the skills to get a good mix on stock plug-ins if your iLok stops working (here's a better idea: stop using plug-ins requiring iLoks! I'm ideologically against it so I'll never get to use Steven Slate's plug-ins /endrant).
Can you get a good sound out of any mic using your skills with mic placement when you don't have your favorite mics with you?
Is there a lesson in there somewhere?
Maybe.
But the most important one is: Go To The Goddamn
Doctor!
