How fixing your car helps you learn more about mixing

I have a confession to make.

I don't know squat about cars.

That manliness is severely lacking in my skill-set. Anytime something goes wrong with the car I don't have a clue what to do with it. The engine intimidates me and everything about fixing a car is just too much for me to think about.

But I also have another problem.

I'm pretty cheap and I don't want to take it to a mechanic whenever something small goes wrong. I'll probably just get ripped off and end up annoyed at the whole situation.

So when my car starting acting up again a while ago my friends told me the spark plugs just needed replaced.

And I go, "Ok. How hard can that be. I could probably do that..."

So I delayed doing it for a few weeks.

In the end I I looked up a how-to video. bought the right parts and tools for the job and did it very carefully.

The result?

Car's fixed and I couldn't feel manlier.

Now, what's that got to do with mixing?

Everything. It's all about overcoming the nervousness of learning something new. Learning how to use EQ, compression or getting a great vocal sound works just the same as fixing your car.

  • You find a tutorial or a how-to that shows you how.
  • You get the right equipment.
  • Do it carefully to understand how it works.
  • Then you can start experiment once you've learnt the fundamentals.

Every learning curve follows the same rules, whether it's for your car or your music production. You find someone to teach you and work with the right tools for the job. What you end up with is a new skill-set and an added boost of confidence.

I wouldn't hesitate to replace the spark plugs if I ever needed to again. I know how to do it now so it's a piece of cake. The same goes for the production process. I can go back and record an acoustic guitar, mix a vocal, EQ a kick drum as many times as I want because I've already learned how to do it.
