If you've EVER used pirated plug-ins, you need to read this

I got an email from a subscriber the other day.

I won't mention him by name for obvious reasons but here's what he had to say:

I got lucky finding by chance (c'mon ...such a liar I am) the Waves mercury bundle on...The temptation and my no-$ situation was to hard to resist. But I feel bad and good. That is over 9000$ us bucks. I don't know what you would have done? So yeah I follow you and learned a lot. Anyway thanx for helping other newbies like myself.

*Sigh*

Getting that email made me mad.

You don't need $9,000 worth of pirated plug-ins to make your mix sound good!

Stock plug-ins do a GREAT job

(And let's be honest here, if you wait for the right deal on their site you'll never need to pay full price for Waves plug-ins. But I digress).

I don't pirate plug-ins so I don't find myself in those situations.

Here's a list of my most used premium plug-ins in case you're curious.

  • Waves Broadcast and Production Bundle
  • Waves CLA Signature Series
  • Kramer Tape
  • Valhalla Room
  • Plug and Mix VIP bundle
  • UAD EMT 140, CS-1, LA2A, 1176 Legacy (Included with Apollo)
  • UAD API Vision Channel Strip
  • Fabfilter Mixing Bundle
  • Perception

I paid for almost all of those plug-ins (I got a few for free due to the type of work I do, from the companies themselves).

But here's the thing:

Did I need ANY of these plug-ins to get a great sounding mix in the Quick Mixing videos?

NOPE!

Don't get me wrong, I love some of my premium plug-ins. But not having them won't break my mix.

In fact, I like that I can get a quality mix from only stock plug-ins. It makes me more confident in my abilities as a mixing engineer because I don't have to resort to all-in-one plug-ins like the CLA series (which I still love).

Knowing my stock plug-ins, especially all the compressor types Logic has to offer, increases my skill set as an engineer.

Slapping on a preset in your stolen $9,000 plug-in bundle doesn't make you a skilled mixing engineer.

So if you're anything like my unnamed subscriber who "follows me and has learned a lot" how about you take a two-hour journey with me where I teach you how to mix using the free stock plug-ins you already have available.
