Yuletide Audio Tip #6 - The Power of Performance From Comping

Published: Thu, 12/17/15

It's day six of our 13 Yuletide Audio Tips series.

Here's what you've missed if you just tuned in:

The sixth Yule Lad to come down from the mountains is Askasleikir.

The English translation of his name is Bowl-Licker and he "hides under beds waiting for someone to put down their 'askur' (a type of bowl with a lid used instead of dishes), which he then steals."

He has something to say about getting a great performance using all the tools you have at your disposal:

Comping is an invaluable part of creating something greater than the sum of its parts. It allows you to combine the most intense part of every performance in a way that creates something incredible. When you're comping vocals make sure you know what you want from the vocalist. Write down each phrase that needs work and record until every part is perfectly recorded. It doesn't have to be perfect in one try because you can take the best parts of each performance and combine them into one super-part. It allows you to be detail-oriented while not stressing out the musician. Keeping the musician comfortable is your most important role. If you reassure them that small mistakes every once in a while during a performance is perfectly acceptable it will take the pressure off and actually gives you a better, stress-free performance.

For more on taking the best out of each performance, the Editing package in Quick Mixing is a great place to continue if you need more technical help.
