Yuletide Audio Tip #7 - Play With Your Room (And Use Your Acoustics)

Published: Fri, 12/18/15

The seventh Yule Lad to come down from the mountains is Hurðaskellir.

The English translation of his name is Door-Slammer and he is "Likes to slam doors, especially during the night."

This guy is loud as hell and is terrifying in the middle of the night.

But you know what'll help get rid of all that noise?

Acoustic treatment.

So ironically, he leaves you with this:

Spend time and money to treat your recording studio. A treated room will make all your microphones sound better because they're not picking up unwanted reflections. It will also help you make better mixing decisions because you can actually hear what's coming out of your speakers without being worried about how the room is coloring your mix. Use portable baffles to surround your musicians if you need. Put treatment behind your monitors on the wall in front of you as well as in the early reflection zones directly to your left and right. Don't forget the ceiling either. If you don't have the opportunity to get a lot of acoustic treatment consider mixing at lower volumes and use headphones to check your mixes. And for recording make sure you do multiple microphone placement tests to find the right spot for the mic.

That's your Friday tip.

Have a great weekend,
