Yuletide Audio Tip #8 - Preparing Your Mixing Session

Published: Sat, 12/19/15

The eighth Yule Lad to come down from the mountains is Skyrgámur.

The English translation of his name is Skyr-Gobbler and he is "A Yule Lad with an affinity for skyr."

In case you didn't know, Skyr is like Icelandic Yoghurt. Kind of a cross between Greek Yoghurt and Sour Cream in a way. It's very healthy and full of protein so bodybuilders love it to help build muscle.

Like The Mountain from Game of Thrones. That guy looks like he's eaten shipping containers full of Skyr.

And like you need Skyr to prepare your body for building muscle, you also need to some advice to prepare your session for mixing.

So Skyrgámur leaves you with this:

Before you start mixing, make sure all the pre-production and recording is done. Think and understand where you are trying to take the song in the mixing phase. What kind of end result are you looking for? Have you arranged each part of the song with mutes to create dynamics and contrast? Have you color-coded your tracks to make for faster mixing and easier workflow? Have you labeled everything so it's easier to find? Preparing and planning isn't a waste of time, it saves you much more time in the long run, making you more effective and faster at your craft. Once the prep-work is done, like a great chef, you're ready to work your magic on your music.

Checking things off a list is a great way to make sure you're not forgetting anything. That's kind of what this tip was about.

Because once you've checked everything off a list you can be more confident moving forward with your production.

That's why I created my 30-step Checklist to Better Music Production in the Music Production Strategies Plus package.

It's a series of things to keep in mind, from pre-production to mixing that guides you through the whole production process.
