What the TERRIBLE Batman & Robin Movie Can Teach You About Mixing

Published: Thu, 02/04/16

Let me tell you a lesson about mixing I had.

It all starts with the god awful Batman & Robin movie.

Man that's a fucking terrible movie isn't it!

It ruined the entire franchise. But....I thought maybe....just maayyyyyybe it would be funny to watch.

Funny.

Not fun or entertaining. Funny. There's a difference.

So I rented it for $2.99 (worst $2.99 I ever spent...) on Amazon Instant Video and proceeded to do my 1,000 piece Batman puzzle in front of the TV.

We wanted something to passively watch and I thought it was fitting.

Man was I wrong.

10 minutes in I stopped the movie. Right after Arnold says "You're not taking me to the cooler!" and the Batman ice-skates come popping out of their boots.

That did it for me. It was simply too much to watch, even for this Batman fanboy!´

Mixing When You're Tired

It did remind me of mixing when you're tired.

You end up making mix moves that you think are great in the moment and you're confident you're making a killer mix.

You're making mix choices based on poor information because your ears are so tired they can't even process how anything sounds anymore.

And then you come back to it the day after and it's absolute garbage!

There's way too much high-mid information, the balance is way off and your effect choices don't even fit the genre of the song!

Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit but the point is, you can only mix so long before your ears are too tired to hear straight.

You might even know thats' what you're doing. You know how long you've sat in that chair and you know that you should take a break. But it's still fun even if you are tired.

Take Breaks

Just like I thought that the Batman movie would be funny because it had been so long since I saw it last you might think those effects are awesome because you've been sitting in that chair for so long.

Moral is, we're both wrong. Batman & Robin is still a terrible movie and you still need a break.
