I've picked up a new hobby lately.
Before I tell you what it is, let me tell you this:
Whatever you tend to do in your profession, it seems that we seek out the opposite in our free time in order to give us balance.
Working in audio, being in two bands and creating content means that I'm creative all the time. There's really no one way to do any of the things I do because I can record and mix multiples ways, I can write a different song next and I can choose what to write about at any given time.
So really....no rules. No boundaries.
Which is why my new hobby, putting together jigsaw puzzles, is the absolute opposite of that.
There's only one way to put together a jigsaw puzzle. The pieces only go in one place and there's no room for flexibility.
And at the end of the day I guess my brain craves
that.
What does that have to do with mixing? I don't know....how about this:
Mixing and mastering still have balance built into it. Although you can mix in multiple different ways (and you should try to do so just to give you a challenge) there are still a fair amount of inflexible fundamentals to follow. The physics of
sound won't change in your room and the EQ spectrum is going to be the same tomorrow, but how you approach it all can be different.
Take Inside the Mix: Mixing Rock by David Glenn and Warren Huart for instance. In
their new training they take the same exact song and teach you two different ways of mixing it. They use the same fundamentals of EQ, compression, saturation and multiband compression but their methods and results still differ.
The same goes for Ian Shepherd's Home Mastering Masterclass. He teaches you how to get great masters in your home studio by using an array of different techniques all aimed at achieving the same results: balanced and punchy masters that make your mixes sound amazing.
The two products have a special introductory discount until tomorrow so if you need to learn some new techniques for mixing and mastering then
you only have a little time left before their discounts go away.
I've personally taken Ian's Home Mastering Masterclass and I highly recommend it. I will also be joining Inside the Mix before tomorrow because I want to learn from these professionals as well.
