When To Use Saturation to DULL Down Your Electric Guitars (And Big Announcement!)

Published: Wed, 03/16/16

Yesterday I promised you a quick saturation tip to use on harsh electric guitars.

As you should know by now, saturation is the fifth plug-in in my five plug-in series that I think are the most important to master to make an awesome sounding mix.

Saturation does a lot of cool things:

  • Thickens up kick drums
  • Adds edginess to snare
  • Adds secret sauce to the vocals
  • Dulls down the guitars...

Huh? Dulls down the guitars? How's that helpful at all?

When To Use Saturation Instead of EQ

Sometimes, saturation can actually help tame some of the higher frequencies. So instead of using EQ, you can slap on a saturation plug-in instead.

It'll help you tame those higher frequencies on harsh sounding electric guitars (wiry Stratocasters spring to mind) while also giving you some smooth tape or tube saturation to add some nice harmonic content to your sound. It's a richer solution than just an EQ cut and your mix will get more out of it.

Top Off Your Mixes With Saturation

Saturation is the fifth and final plug-in I'll be talking about this week and I'm proud to announce that the Audio Issues flagship course, Mixing With 5 Plug-ins is now open!

If you've liked the previous videos that I've sent out and want to get the whole experience come join us inside our brand new membership community!

That's right! I've put all the videos inside your exclusive VIP area that you get access to as soon as you register. Much more streamlined and easier to access than in past courses so I'm excited to see you all in there.

This is where you can engage with me and other students, upload your mixes for feedback and ask questions with anything you're struggling with as you go through the course.

Mixing With 5 Plug-ins will teach you, among other things,:

  • How to use EQ to create track separation and clarity
  • How to use compression to create shape in your instruments, whether you need to balance the dynamics or level out the transients.
  • How to use reverb and delay to create full, rich and thick vocals
  • How to use saturation to sweeten up a mix
  • How to know what to look out for when you're making your mix translate to other speaker systems.

What's Included?

As soon as you sign up you get the multi-tracks to the song we'll be working on together.

Then every week you'll get a new video tackling that week's plug-in, showing you exactly how I go through mixing the song as well as giving you additional tips and tricks that you can use in your mixes.

Then you can post your progress inside the membership area and get feedback from other members and listen to how others are doing, giving you ideas on what you can improve.

The course closes this Sunday at midnight so click the button below to join us and let's make a killer sounding mix using only 5 plug-ins!
