Ever since I graduated college I’ve steadily invested in my continued education.

Reading books. Taking online courses. Learning from others.

It makes me smarter.

In fact, one of my all-time favorite devices has nothing to do with music but everything to do with becoming smarter.

It's my Kindle, my device I use for alienating my band mates on tour by sitting in silence reading, occasionally chuckling to myself. I've read about four books on this tour already so I feel pretty good about myself...I don't read a lot of fiction so most of the books I read have something to do with teaching me something new. 

I look at it as “investing in education.”

Boring you might think. And sure, education does have a negative, “oh man I’m so bored with this class” type of connotation.

But if you’re passionate about learning about something, education is awesome. It opens doors to things you didn’t know you could do.

And in audio, that’s a lot of doors.

From learning about microphones to room acoustics. From EQ and compression to editing. And let’s not forget how all those things tie together so well during mixing.
