How and When to Go Overboard on Effects In Your Mixes

Published: Fri, 01/20/17

This weekend I'm hanging out with two of my favorite audio bloggers, Graham Cochrane and Joe Gilder from Dueling Mixes.

We're all meeting up at NAMM to talk shop, nerd out on audio and have a good time.

Funny coincidence, I watched Graham's Dueling Mixes video this week after I tried my own hand at mixing the multi-tracks the community was working on.

I like working on it on my own without watching the videos first because I don't want my mix to be colored by what they do.

However, if you run into problems with a particular instrument it's great to get access to two tutorial videos that give you solutions to anything you've run up against.

The reason I think watching the videos is so important after your own mix is that I usually end up going in a completely different direction.

And that's perfectly OK!

Take one month's mix for instance.

I went for big and spacious, Bonham-style drums and added some crazy, Wilco-style vocals. Then, when I watched the videos both Graham and Joe had really great mixes, although they were a little more tame in the effects department than I was.

That's what I like about Dueling Mixes. When I work with clients I tend to be a little more careful about over-processing.

But when it comes to practicing the Dueling Mixes tracks I can go completely overboard and nobody has to know about it.

Well....except the thousands of people who read this I suppose....cat's out of the bag on that one then...

Practicing going overboard with effects can actually be pretty educational because you learn so much about them, which you can use later on when you get the occasional client that really wants something crazy in their mixes.

So if you're looking for a fun space to practice all the crazy ideas you have in your head, check out Dueling Mixes.

In fact, this weekend I'm offering the Recording & Mixing Strategies Bundle Plus to anyone who purchases through my affiliate link. That's a $77 value.
