Yesterday, a friend of mine was talking to me about mixing and my newest
eBook, Step By Step Mixing.
He was saying that there aren't really formulas or step-by-step
instructions to mix every song. Each mix follows a basic pattern but since each song is different there really isn't a single way to mix all songs.
Having released something called Step By Step Mixing, you might be surprised that I wholeheartedly agree with him.
I do have a basic approach to every mix (one that I showed you yesterday), but I modify it every time depending on what the song needs.
People want a one-size-fits-all
system for anything because it's easier. They don't want to know all the details and intricacies of a subject, they just want the quick solution. Unfortunately for mixing, there is no one solution because the songs are so different.
The absolute best I can show you is how to tackle a mix with a basic blueprint, using the most important processors you need to learn to get better at mixing, EQ, compression, reverb, delay and
saturation.
From there it's about applying those skills in practice. That's where you get better over time.
