Back when I was starting to learn guitar I couldn't understand the concept of scales.
I thought: "Eric Clapton didn't need no music theory and neither will I"
That basically sums up my dumb-assiness...
I didn't want to learn music theory and what notes were in a scale because I didn't understand how it would help me.
I just looked at it like another chore.
Like musical math homework.
Little did I know that learning scales is the best way to learn how to solo.
Knowing your way around scales s is like having a roadmap for playing awesome guitar solos!
Scales tell you exactly where to play if you want to sound good.
It gives you a system of good and bad notes.
And some blue notes in between.
When I FINALLY got that concept into my stubborn boy brain my guitar playing improved immensely (and immediately).
I finally understood why scales were so important.
It wasn't just boring music math.
It was like having a superpower.
Mixing is much the same way.
It's a bunch of plug-ins, processors and techniques that you can't figure out.
But once you realize which plug-ins do most of the work and what steps you should take to get to a finished mix, mixing becomes easy.
Take EQ for instance...
Once you figure out where muddiness sits in the frequency spectrum or what frequencies are making your mix sound harsh...you'll slowly start putting those numbers to sounds and a roadmap will appear in your head.
Once I'd finally understood the importance of learning scales, I plastered posters all over my bedroom.
These posters had different scales that I followed every time I practiced my solos.
After a while those scales were burned into my hands.
My fingers knew exactly where to go and I could easily figure out the key and scale of a song whenever I wanted to play a solo.
You'll get to that same place with your mixes.
You'll have to practice your ears but it's good to have a system that tells you where to go from beginning to end.
That's where The Step By Step Mixing System comes in.
Look at it like a scale-chart blueprint that helps you mix like a rockstar guitar player.
