First off, let me explain myself… I did it for the greater good!
Somehow... it worked.
I was actually the one who shared some killer content on creativity yesterday...and I KNEW that I could help you even further...
So, I decided to take the most honorable path to spread the word and invade Bjorgvin’s email account.
Oh yeah! I’m Alex by the way.
I would have loved to meet you under different circumstances, but alas.
We can keep this between us, right?
While I’m surely going to get caught, ruin my reputation and burn bridges…
I come bearing an important message!
I want to talk about THE MOST IMPORTANT THING (clickbaity enough for you?) to create, record and produce your own music at a pro-level.
The best way I can illustrate it is by sharing some of my story:
I was obsessed with the idea of producing my own music. Writing impactful songs and creating sonic experiences just like my favorite records was always on my mind.
When I was starting out, I was literally starting from zero. I had no clue how to record a decent sound. I thought I could capture an idea and then make it sound amazing afterward (I had it completely backwards)
I didn’t even know what an EQ plugin was for months! I hadn’t heard about a compressor before. I just used the faders to half haphazardly get what I had in my head.
I gradually started to learn from the basics from the forums and YouTube tutorials. I began to realize all the different ways I could start making my music sound better. The doors of possibility were starting to open up!
I would quickly try out the new trick or technique I learned about and start thinking I was pretty good.
But then I would compare my music to some of my favorite artists, or a mix I really liked… and it would make me want to quit. Why did their music sound so much better than mine? What did they know that I don’t?
It really put a damper on my confidence. Even though I was getting so much information. I didn’t know if I was doing it right. After all, I was alone in my basement trying to get creative, record my ideas, and fiddling knobs without truly understanding why.
I was DETERMINED to understand how to produce my own music, so I actually ended up going to school for audio engineering In the hopes to create the music in my head.
The embarrassing part is that even after going to school and learning all the technical knowledge behind the process of recording and mixing music… turns out it wasn’t the answer.
I still couldn’t consistently finish my own music!
This was a low for me…
I started asking myself:
- Am I cut out for this?
- Is there something wrong with me?
- Why can’t I figure this out?
Until I finally had a breakthrough, I realized it was my internal struggles that were actually holding me back.
I had no approach or strategy behind my creative efforts. I didn’t have a clear pathway to bring my musical ideas to life and produce my own finished tracks.
Over the years I then developed a work ethic. A process. A system.
That’s how I learned….
It’s THE PROCESS that actually gets you the results!
Once I realized this, it gave me so much more confidence because I started getting consistent results! When I was at home, sitting in my studio I knew I was approaching the process like the pros.
Suddenly the audio trolls, random YouTube tutorials, and constant noise online got a whole lot less interesting.
The big takeaway from this is that what separates the professionals from amateurs is their process and approach.
- If they don’t feel inspired? They still show up
- If they don’t feel productive? They still show up
- If they’re overwhelmed and their life is hanging on by a thread? They still. show. up.
Summed up to one word: consistency
What will allow you to remain consistent? Having a rock-solid creative process in place. Something to help you through the creative process, push through obstacles and maximize your studio time!
Generally, most people hyper-focus too much on the result (the final product), when in reality you should be hyper-focused on the process (how you create music)
This is crucial.
If you’ve always wanted to produce your own music at a pro-quality level, the best way forward is to develop your approach, your workflow, your creative system.
